Abstract:

Previous research by these investigators has shown that fasting and septic fasting induce changes in the metabolism and turnover of EFAs in liver lipids as well as modify lipid metabolism. The objective of the study was to assess the effects of 3 week dietary treatments with 14% (w/w) of either soybean oil (control), a mixture (50:50) of flaxseed oil and safflower oils (high ALA ? 20% w/w of total fatty acids) or borage oil (high GLA ? 20% w/w of total fatty acids) on liver fatty acids and lipid metabolism in fed rats, in normal fasted rats, and septic fasted rats, and on survival from sepsis. Dietary ALA increased the incorporation of ALA, EPA and DPA in neutral lipids and phospholipids; and DHA, DGLA, AA, stearic, OL and LA in phopholipids in the livers of fed, fasted, and septic fasted rats. Dietary GLA increased all n?6 fatty acids except LA and reduced all n?3 fatty acids in neutral lipids and phospholipids. Dietary ALA increased liver phopholipid content in fasted and septic fasted rats and was more effective in lowering serum cholesterol and liver neutral lipids than was GLA. Dietary ALA counteracted sepsis?related changes in liver weight, platelet count, body temperature, prekallikrein, serum glucose, beta?hydroxybutyrate and free fatty acids. Dietary GLA significantly reduced survival from sepsis. Dietary ALA compensated for a sepsis?induced decrease in n?3 fatty acids in liver neutral lipids and phopholipids and improved septic biochemistry. The authors indicated that the results suggested an important role for n?3 fatty acids to balance n?6 fatty acids in the septic state.
